Often overlooked in favour of the famous neighbouring resort of Zermatt, Saas Fee is a magical resort in it's own right, situated at the end of a valley and surrounded by huge peaks and glaciers. The village of Saas Fee is fantastic, with a great traditional feel to it, and a real favourite with families. It's not hard to see why it's nicknamed 'The Pearl of the Alps', with thirteen 4000m+ peaks surrounding it, including the Allalinhorn and Dom, Switzerland's second highest mountain at 4545m. The village is situated high up in the Saastal Valley at an altitude of 1800m and has a fantastic view of the Fee Gletcher (glacier), which really dominates the far end of the valley and almost appears to be tumbling down into it. It's a traffic free resort as well - you can get to the village by road, but if you're travelling by car you need to park just outside the village.

It's not hard to see why Saas Fee is nicknamed 'The Pearl of the Alps'. Whilst it's often overlooked in favour of near neighbour Zermatt, Saas Fee is a spectacular destination in it's own right, with thirteen 4000m+ peaks surrounding it, including the Allalinhorn and Dom, Switzerland's second highest mountain at 4545m. The village is situated high up in the Saastal Valley at an altitude of 1800m and has a fantastic view of the Fee Gletcher (glacier), which really dominates the far end of the valley and almost appears to be tumbling down into it. It goes without saying that it's a top ski and snowboarding resort, also offering summer skiing up at Mittelallalin, but for non-skiers who want to take in in a good view of the scenery, take the world's highest underground funicular, the Metro Alpin, up to the Mittelallalin Restaurant, the highest revolving restaurant in the world, at 3456m. Just keep your finger's crossed that it's a clear day. You can get to the village by road, but if you're travelling by car you need to park just outside the village as it's been traffic free since the road was built in the 50's.

Saas-Fee was the mountain resort location where the video for Wham!'s hit single "Last Christmas" was filmed back in 1984.

The cable car that George Michael and chums gets into to go up the mountain is clearly visible with the name "Saas-Fee" on it.

Saas Fee - Any Chance of Early Snow ?

Often overlooked in favour of it's more famous neighbour Zermatt, Saas Fee is a great choice for some early season skiing. As with Zermatt it's situated in one of the drier areas of the Alps, but again the high altitude of the resort, a ski range right up to 3500m, and a glacier right above the village, all adds up to a great choice for those wanting a good chance of early pre-Christmas snow. The glacier that overlooks the village actually allows skiing all year round, but if you can wait until December then many more of the surrounding pistes and lifts will have opened allowing a much wider range of difficulty and terrain.
