Andermatt is one of those hidden gems - relatively unknown as an international ski resort for once-a-year skiers, but a popular destination for more hardcore, extreme skiers, thanks to it's steep powder-filled slopes, ideal for some quality off-piste skiing and free-riding. Andermatt has always appealed to those seeking an old-fashioned, traditional resort, but all that could change as plans have been passed, and work started, on a resort-style development that will see a number of large hotels and golf course created, the first of which is planned for 2013-14. As well as it's winter appeal, Andermatt is also a popular summer destination, and the new development will most likely increase it's popularity even further.

Andermatt - Getting There
As usual, we recommend Switzerland's excellent rail network. It takes just under two hours from Zurich, with a single change at Goschenen. This easy access makes it a popular destination from Switzerland's premier city. Whilst Zurich is the nearest major city, Andermatt is also about 3 hours from both the airports at Basel and Berne.

Generally Andermatt's après-ski is very quiet, almost none-existent to be honest, which is somewhat surprising given its popularity with skiers from Zurich and its cult status amongst free-riders and off-piste skiers.
