2011 Women's Super G Race - Alpine Skiing World Championships Gamrmisch-Partenkirchen
Austrian Elisabeth Goergl had an early birthday present 12 days shy of her 30th, claiming gold at the opening event of
the Garmisch Championships in the Super G. With daytime temperatures rising to an incredible 17 degrees, the organisers
had been watering the course to ensure the race-course snow survived the mild weather, resulting in a course so icy
it had seasoned-cameramen shaking their heads in disbelief. Goergl, who'd sung the championship's official song
"You're the Hero (Between Heaven and Hell)" at the opening ceremony the night before, was unfazed and raced down the course
0.05 seconds faster than American Julia Mancuso and 0.21 ahead of local heroine Maria Riesch. Riesch's great rival
Lindsey Vonn (the reigning Super-G champion from Val d'Isere in 2009),
who had complained that the slope was a safety concern and "like pond ice", finished 7th and also claimed her concussion from a
training-run clash had affected her, and that she couldn't remember the course layout properly.
