Amazing Scenery

If there's a more stunning location for a mountain resort than Zermatt then we've yet to come across it. Just sit back and enjoy the journey up the valley from Brig to the car-free village and get ready for your first glimpse of the Matterhorn, you wont be disappointed. Zermatt sits at the end of the Mattertal valley and is surrounded by 4000m peaks and glaciers, although naturally it's the Matterhorn that grabs your attention for most of the time. Oh yes, and the skiing's not bad either.

Early Snow

It may be located in one of the dryest parts of the Alps, but it's also one of the highest, so thanks to it's altitude Zermatt tends to keep hold of it's snow once it's had some.

Summer Skiing

Thanks to the incredible Klein Matterhorn cable car, Zermatt has access to Europe's largest and highest summer ski area. Featuring 20km of pistes (the longest being 7km) and 7 lifts accessing the area, the Theodul Glacier area is open every day from May to November, after which many of the lifts further down the valley start to open. The Klein Matterhorn cable car, one of the most dramatic in the world, takes you up to a height of 3820m (an elevator called the Gipfel-lift can take you up to a viewing platform at 3883m) and entry to the pistes is via a tunnel through the mountain. From there you can take a number of different pistes, such as number 85 - the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, right down to Trockener Steg at 2939m. It's worth noting that from July to September some of the lifts at Trockener Steg sometime close because of lack of snow. Vice versa, it's not uncommon for the runs down to the next main station at Furgg (2432m) to be open in early November and well into May. The area also has one of the best freestyle parks in the Alps - The Gravity Snowboard Park. With all this skiing and boarding and, of course, the view of THAT mountain (the Matterhorn for those unfamiliar with Zermatt), it's not hard to see why this is one of Europe's most popular summer ski destinations.
