Ski Image Photo: Andermatt Tourism

Andermatt is one of those hidden gems - relatively unknown as an international ski resort for once-a-year skiers, but a popular destination for more hardcore, extreme skiers, thanks to it's steep powder-filled slopes, ideal for some quality off-piste and free-riding. Andermatt has always appealed to those seeking an old-fashioned, traditional resort, but all that could change as plans have been passed, and work started, on a resort-style development that will see a number of large hotels and golf course created, the first of which is planned for 2013-14. As well as it's winter appeal, Andermatt is also a popular summer destination, and the new development will most likely increase that even further.

Snow Sure

What it lacks in the size of it's ski area (about 40km, modest in comparison with many other resorts) it more than makes up for in it's abundance of snow. Yes, Andermatt's snow record is excellent, one of the best in Switzerland, especially on the Gemsstock mountain that serves the resort, which is one of Switzerland's snowiest areas, with a massive average annual snowfall just nudging 10m. The upper slopes of Gemsstock are nearly 3000m as well, which ensures decent snow when lower areas are suffering, whilst it has a northerly facing aspect too, so is less affected by the sun. On the other hand, one of the resorts other ski areas - Natschen, has more southerly-facing, lower altitude slopes, and doesn't hold the snow as well.

Apres Ski

Generally v.quiet, almost none-existent, which is somewhat surprising given its popularity with skiers from Zurich and its cult status amongst freeriders and off-piste skiers. The River House, which is actually a B+B, has a small bar which hosts some live bands. Curva at the Hotel Monopol is good. Spycher is good. Picadilly/Gotthard is lively at weekends.

Getting There

As usual, we recommend Switzerland's excellent rail network. It takes just under two hours from Zurich, with a single change at Goschenen. This easy access makes it a popular destination from Switzerland's premier city. Whilst Zurich is the nearest major city, Andermatt is also about 3 hours from both the airports at Basel and Berne.
