Val Gardena Ok, here's the main deal about Val Gardena - it's the name of a valley in the Dolomites rather than an actual town or resort. There are three small towns in the valley - Selva, Santa Cristina and Ortisei. Confusingly, half the ski brochures you flick through just use Val Gardena as a general location whereas the other half use Selva, Santa Cristina and Ortisei. If you want things to get really confusing then be aware that there are both Italian and German names for all these places, we've just used the Italian names, if you want the German versions then here they are: Val Gardena's German name is Groden, Selva's is Wolkenstein, Santa Cristina's is St. Christina and Ortisei is St. Ulrich. Confused ? You should be.

Anyway, don't worry about the names, rest assured that if you end up on holiday in Val Gardena then you're in for an absolute treat - this is without doubt one of the most stunning places on Earth.

Amazing Scenery

There are 3 resorts in the Gardena valley: Selva, Ortisei and Santa Crestina, and to be honest there's nothing to choose between them in terms of the stunning scenery on offer. Located in the Dolomites on the eastern side of the Alps, the village is sat amongst the Sassolungo, Puez and Sella Group of montains, with the Sassolungo (also known as the Langkofel) standing out in particular with it's almost knife-like appearance. Val Gardena is like a showcase for everything the Dolomites has to offer - huge faces of jagged rocks sat on top vast expanses of alpine meadows, with the peaks changing colour constantly throughout the day, often giving off spectacular shades of pink and red. For those heading there in the winter months you wont be disappointed either - the valley is part of the vast Dolomiti Superski area, with an incredible 1200 km of pistes on offer !
