If anything's going to convert any non-believers to watching the Winter Olympics then it's this.
When boarder-cross was first given some air-time at the Olympics we thought it was good, but the skiing
version makes the snowboarding look like a gentle cruise down a blue run. It's absolutely brutal !
You'd have to be a decent skier to try it, but anyone can watch it, and everyone who does will love it.
Watching it make it debut at Vancouver was fantastic - two enormous crashes in the first two heats left
us scratching our heads thinking, wow! why has it taken so long for this to be made into an Olympic
sport ? It was carnage out there, like watching It's a Knockout on snow !
Ok, so it might not be the purists cup of tea, but for grabbing the attention of youngsters
and giving skiing some more attention, this is an event that can put ski racing on the map.
Something plenty of ski racers who can't quite make it in downhill and slalom disciplines
seem to be in agreement with, as many have transferred over to the sport in the last few years.
The event made its debut at the 2010 Vancouver games, where it really captured the imagination of the
watching public and millions around the world on tv, with its mix of mayhem,
and downright heart-in-the-mouth excitement.
Swiss racer Michael Schmid was a fantastic winner, the only man in the competition whi managed to
avoid trouble in every round, thanks in no small part to his lightening quick start.
