Only one winner here, and unlikely to change to be honest, with Europe hosting the event more times than all the other continents
put together. And will any other continent apart from Europe, North America or Asia ever host it ? Seems unlikely - the likes of
New Zealand and Chile might have some decent ski areas but they're facilities and infrastructure come nowhere near the level of
their
European and American counterparts. And it would sure seem strange having a Winter Olympics during a European summer.

America leads the way here, having hosted the Winter Olympics four times, one more than France. The surprising figures here
are that the traditional Alpine countries of Austria, Switzerland and Italy have only hosted it twice each, with the Swiss last
hosting it way back in 1948.

Only three venues have held the Winter Olympics more than once - Innsbruck (Austria), Lake Placid (USA) and
St Moritz (Switzerland). Of these, only Lake Placid has clearly been selected twice. Innsbruck stepped in
for the 1976 games after Denver pulled out following financial issues. St Moritz held the games for the
second time in 1948. Sapporo in Japan had originally been selected to host the games in 1940, but the
games were cancelled because of the war. Subsequently, Japan and Germany were not allowed to compete, let alone
host the games, because of their roles in the war.

So where will the Winter Olympics go next ? Well, most of us are probably aware that the next games kick off in 2010
in the Canadian city of Vancouver. But how many people know that 4 years later it will be held in the Russian city of
Sochi ? And how many people have actually heard of Sochi ! The 2018 games will be awarded in Durban, South Africa,
on the 6th of July 2011. Only three cities have actually applied for the games... Annecy in France, Munich in Germany
and PyeongChang in South Korea, which has bid twice before and will be hoping it's a case of third time lucky.
